Music

I have been playing guitar for most of my life. I have classical training, but enjoy blues and jazz guitar and the odd metal riff. I played in a few bands and jazz combos in earlier times of my life and I enjoy composing music. I have also been a piano amateur for many years, with little sign of improvement, but I am quite good at xylophone and glockenspiel, having played them in concert bands. I was a member of the Committee of the Balliol Music Society, beginning just prior to the 1,775th Concert and staying on until just after the 1,799th Concert.

My second-favourite type of algebraic variety is also my second-favourite variety of guitar.

Other Activities

I was the Arts Editor for The Oxonian Review of Books for a couple of years in the late 2000s. I commissioned pieces on goings-on at the Barbican; American culture through the lens of The Wire; a unique exhibition of Russian works at the Royal Academy of Art; and other odds and ends.

I also paint in acrylics. I prefer landscapes and seascapes, but can do portraiture if necessary.
