Overall a good instructor. Enjoyed his sense of humour. George, you made taking math easy and fun. Your sense of humor was second to none... even if you didn't realize you were being funny. Great analogies as well (particularly liked the square dancing one). Your knowledge is impeccable! Keep up the great work. Lectures were great but I still had to learn some concepts from the book. Also, a lot of the general review from first year math classes were unnecessary as it was drilled quite deeply into our minds. Anyone who doesn't know how to take a simple derivative or integral by now should be... well... The labs should be looked at more. I think the midterms may be better if given more time. The quizzes are tough to complete in the allotted time. My lab TA did not provide useful advice when asked, just simply told to look in the text book. Perhaps you could do examples that are not the examples that are in the text. It would be nice to have a few examples to study from. You know that math is difficult, why not have a tutorial every week---the ones after the quiz are no good because that TA's can never answer any questions. Its like they don't know that material. The assignments should be more related to how the test and quiz questions will be asked. The only problem I had with the course was the size of the homework assignments. There is a quiz every week which also tests our knowledge and the assignments typically had a few questions unrelated to the current topics. I think 5 tough questions that require a few steps to complete would be sufficient and less time consuming than 15 smaller questions. Or, to decrease the adverse effects of little calculation errors, the questions could be split into smaller parts, since there are no part marks for having the correct procedure.Overall, the lectures were (almost) fun to attend! He explains very slow so it's easy to understands, and I like it when he gives out examples relating it to real life situations. He's a good prof.I just don't like part B of the exam. I think part B should be worth 30% instead of 40%. I felt that the midterms were excessively tough. Tougher than they needed to be. I have taken a calculus class before covering more than 75% of the material covered in this class, and received a good grade in that class. This class however, is not the same story. Needs to talk louder at times, but overall a good teacher I really enjoyed this course. I found it intellectually stimulating, and it always demanded a lot from me. I think Dr. Patrick could teach better. He seems to give really easy examples in class, and not go too in depth with theory. When we write his tests later, they prove to be quite difficult; I think it's because he is a genius and can do all of this in his head. He makes good use of humor in class, and most students like it. He goes through course material slower than the other section, and as a result we have found ourselves behind when it comes time to write a quiz or complete an assignment. I learned from the textbook for most of this course because I did not think Dr. Patrick's methods of teaching were helpful. The textbook for this course is terrible. It doesn't give a good variety of examples, and a lot of the questions in there are quite difficult. This textbook is designed as a reference book, not a book to learn from. I strongly encourage switching to the Stewart text book for engineers as well. The exams and homework were way to hard with to much weight given to a few, impossible, b part questions. I spent way more time studying for this class than any other and am still struggling cause it is way too hard. The instructors seem to forget that we have other classes to study for. Also the text book is not helpful at all. It is written for someone who has a complete understanding of mathematics and is only reviewing the material, someone who is just learning the material has to translate it into something we can understand. George Patrick was a great prof. He held my interest throughout the lectures and he presented the concepts and applications clearly. He is the best mathematics professor that I have had yet. The class itself was very, very demanding in both difficulty and time spent but calculus is used in every class so it was necessary. All in all, it was a good class with a good professor. Midterms are too long and 60% of them is low difficultly and the other 40% is very high difficultly with nothing in between. Class was as expected, but midterms, quizzes, and assignments often contained questions far beyond anything being taught in the class or from the textbook. Quizzes and midterms were often too long for the average person to sufficiently complete in the given time period. It would help if the professor could be a bit more prepared in class, it seemed that he got lost in the middle of the class. This class is too difficult and FAR too time consuming. By the time you finish the assignment each weak AND study for the weekly quizzes, there is hardly time left for other classes. The knowledge gained from this class is small and invaluable and not worth the time and effort put into it. The quizzes were too challenging the the midterms made it almost impossible to achieve a mark over 60%. Part B of each midterm was far too involved and complicated with things we haven't seen before and things we cannot figure out. The tests would be much more useful for evaluating students without part B. Part B only causes students to lose marks for no reason and does not fairly evaluate our knowledge. I doubt I will ever use most of the content from the class outside of school. If I just so happened to come across a situation where I needed to use math from 223 I would not know how to do it or I would have forgotten it anyway. The assignments need to be much shorter and should actually be related to the material learned IN CLASS. As for tests, they need to be shorter and there should be NO such thing as "Part B"
