Saskatoon is a pleasant city of around 220,000 people straddling the
banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It is positioned at 52°7'N
latitude, 106°38'W longitude, about 500 m above sea level. It
is located near the western edge of the
Saskatchewan Plain
, the second
of three levels of the
Canadian prairies.
It has a semi-arid continental climate,
with sunny summers and invigorating winters. The city's name derives
from the
Cree
word misāskwatomina which refers to a species of
serviceberry
Amelanchier alnifolia
which grows freely in the river valley.
