FIRST YEAR COURSES

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers seven first year courses. They consist of MATH 100.6, MATH 101.3, MATH 110.3, MATH 112.3, MATH 116.3, MATH 124.3 and STATS 103.3.

MATH 100.6 surveys some basic topics at a level slightly higher than high school mathematics and is intended for Education students taking the Elementary Option. MATH 101.3 and STATS 103.3 give superficial treatment of calculus and elementary probability and should be taken by students who want a minimal exposure to university level mathematics. Neither MATH 100.6, MATH 101.3 nor STATS 103.3 are intended to adequately prepare the student for further mathematics courses.

Students in other colleges who want or are required to take Calculus should register in MATH 110.3 in their first term. High school Calculus is not a prerequisite for this course. Engineering students then proceed to MATH 124.3. Other students who do well in MATH 110.3 are strongly advised to take MATH 116.3 in the second term. This course will properly prepare them for other courses in Mathematics or Statistics that they may wish to take in their university career. MATH 116.3 is essential for those majoring in Mathematics or Statistics (and several other science disciplines) and it is also recommended for mathematically adept students pursuing other disciplines. Mathematical tools are becoming increasingly important in not only the physical sciences but also in life sciences, social sciences and even the humanities.

Students who want a second term of Calculus but who have no intention of taking further courses in Mathematics, may take MATH 112.3.

FIRST YEAR CALCULUS COURSES

MATH 110.3 - Introduction to Calculus
Prerequisite: Algebra 30 and Geometry-Trigonometry 30, or Mathematics B30 and C30. This course is a review of functions, introduction to derivatives and definite integrals, techniques of differentiation, maximum and minimum problems, implicit differentiation, anti-derivatives.

MATH 112.3 - Elementary Calculus with Applications
(a terminal course in Calculus)
Prerequisite: MATH 110.3. The definite integral, techniques of integration, simple differential equations, applications and numerical techniques. MATH 112.3 is intended to be a terminal course in Calculus and should be taken only by those students who are content to limit their mathematical options.

MATH 116.3 - Calculus with Applications
Prerequisite: MATH 110.3. This course covers the material of MATH 112.3 in more depth, including the mathematical foundations of limits, continuity and differentiability; advanced curve sketching, inverse functions, and the inverse trigonometric functions. MATH 116.3 is the specified prerequisite for most second-year courses in Mathematics and Statistics.

Advanced Placement in Calculus at the U. of S.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers advanced placement to students who have obtained a strong grounding in introductory Calculus in high school. Students requesting advanced placement will be required to write a test at the University around the end of August. A nominal fee will be charged for this test. Students who pass the placement test will be permitted to register for MATH 116.3 without first taking MATH 110.3. For further information, write to

OTHER FIRST YEAR COURSES

MATH 100.6
This is an introductory course designed for College of Education students planning to teach at the elementary school level. Topics include: basic algebra review, mathematics of finance, number theory, linear algebra, linear programming, counting techniques, probability, statistics.

MATH 101.3
This is an elementary introduction to calculus. This course may not be included in the courses making up a major in mathematics, but may be used as a prerequisite for a few second and third year courses that do not require Calculus.

STATS 103.3
This is an elementary introduction to probability. It may not be used as part of a major in statistics, but may be used as a prerequisite for a few second and third year courses.

MATH 124.3
This course is designed for students who register in the College of Engineering and is taken after MATH 110.3. The content of MATH 124.3 is roughly equivalent to that of MATH 116.3.
