MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS OR STATISTICS

Students may take a three-year major in Mathematics, a four-year major in Mathematics, or a four-year major in Statistics. The three-year major requires 30 credit units in Mathematics or Statistics, whereas the four-year major requires 36 credit units.

Students should take MATH 110.3 and MATH 116.3 in their first year. Students are also encouraged to include a first year Computer Science course in their program. Some of the third and fourth year courses in Applied Mathematics and Statistics will make use of the computer lab.

In their second year, students normally take a number of courses (up to 15 credits units) in Mathematics and Statistics such as Advanced Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Probability, and Statistics.

In the third and fourth years, students may choose from a variety of courses, depending on whether they wish to concentrate in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics.

The graduate with a four year major in Mathematics or Statistics may seek a career in a computer science, insurance, consulting, or polling firm depending on the courses making up their degree. Graduates may also be able to continue their studies in related disciplines such as Management Science, Economics, or Operations Research.
