(4) An isosceles triangle has a perimeter of 42 cm. Express the area A of the triangle as a function of the length b of the base of the triangle.

SOLUTION:

  2x + b = 42
  2x = 42 - b  ==>  x = 21 -b/2

  (21 - b/2)2 = h2 + (b/2)2
  441 - 21b + b2/4 = h2 + b2/4

  h2 = 441 - 21b
  h =

  A = b/2
