(1) A woman 5 feet tall is standing near a street lamp that is 12 feet tall. Express the length L of her shadow as a function of her distance d from the base of the lamp.
SOLUTION: 

 

    12    5
  ----- = -
  d + L   L

   12L = 5d + 5L
    7L = 5d
     L = 5d/7
