(1) Simplify. Expand any products.
(a) 4y - (6 - 3x + y)
(b) (2 + 13/3)(9/52)
(c) (4/x)-1
(d) 3 - (1/2)(-x2 + x + 2) - 5(1.2x2 - 2.7)
(e) 2
r2 + 4(2
r)(100/r2)
(f) -36(x - 1)(x + 2)
(g) (2x - 1)2
HINT:
(a) Remember to distribute the minus sign through to each term when expanding.
(b) First find a common denominator for (2 + 13/3). Then simplify.
(c) Recall that any expression raised to a negative power is equivalent to the
reciprocal of that expression, raised to the same power (but positive).
(d) First change the decimal numbers into fractions. Then expand. Group like
terms together to simplify.
(e) Cancel common terms in the numerator and denominator.
(f) Remember the steps of "FOIL".
(g) Rewrite the expression without an exponent and then "FOIL" it.
