ADVANCED EXERCISES

(4) Alphonse, Olaf, and Mortimer have $51 together. Find out how much each has if Alphonse has one half what Olaf and Mortimer have combined and Morimer has $3 more than Alphonse.

SOLUTION:

 (1) A = (O + M)/2
 (2) A + 3 = M

Substituting (2) into (1):

 A = (O + A + 3)/2
 2A = O + A + 3
 (3) A - 3 = O

 (4) A + O + M = 51

Substituting (2) and (3) into (4):

 A + A - 3 + A + 3 = 51
 3A = 51
 A = 17

 O = 17 - 3 = 14
 M = 17 + 3 = 20

Alphonse has $17, Olaf has $14, and Mortimer has $20.
