(1)Factor.
(a) 25x2 - (40/3)x + 16/9
(b) z3 - z2 - 13z + 4
(c) (x + 5)2 - 64
(d) 102B -(9)(10)B + 14
(e) 3x3 + 4x2 - 5x - 2
HINT:
(a) This is a perfect square, but be careful. The coefficient of x2
is not 1 and so the statement in the tutorial about sqrt(constant term)*(2) equaling the coefficient middle term (x term) is not correct!! In this case,
the coefficient of the middle term should equal 2*sqrt(constant term)*sqrt(x2 coefficient).
(b) Find all possible factors (k) of the constant term (4) and then test all
factors of the form (x - k).
(c) Difference of squares.
(d) Think of 10B as a variable just like x. That is, let x = 10B.
(e) Try a few small integers to see if you can find at least
one root. This will give you a factor to work with.
